Software for a Lagos-Nigeria based SME.

It was an elaborate project that involved creating interfaces to handle both OPERATIONAL as well as FINANCIAL performance data recording and analysis/trending.

The latter (i.e. financial data handling/reporting interfaces) required that I collaborate closely with a highly experienced financial consultant (boasting over a decade of audit experience, and also an ICAN Examiner) to incorporate key Financial Performance Reports like Manufacturing Account, Trading Account, Profit & Losss Report, Trial Balance, Assets Register etc.

I came away from the experience with useful insights about creating best practice spreadsheet interfaces for bookkeeping/accounts preparation that have served me quite well over the years (NB: I have NO formal bookkeeping/accounting training of any sort)

The Situation:
In most progressive companies (regardless of size) busy managers/executives routinely handle business data and information generated daily, to prepare standard reports for use by senior management/decision makers etc.

The Problem:
Generating the needed reports is often not easy. Some data needs to be tabulated/charted – possibly correlations drawn as well. Often times the data collation and report generation process – though done on spreadsheets – is not well managed. The boss sometimes has to get involved in sorting out the resultant confusion so as to get the report out on time!
